hi sake friends!
this is a last minute meetup as i am in town very briefly, but would love to see you and partake in some sake fun! i can tell you about my stint brewing sake for the first sake brew pub outside of japan if you do come.

a lot has changed since i left vancouver and there's a few sake spots purporting to be 'sake bars'. so i thought we'd better put one of them to the test.

let's check out cocolo -- on 4th near arbutus.
they have a handful of sake samplers (always a good way to try sake for the uninitiated), and from the looks of it, their list is decent and all seem to be available by the glass, which is pretty rare around here.

hope to see you there!

The last BYOS event was a fun and affordable evening with lots of great sake and food - so I thought I would do it again. Please bring some sake to share and some food to share (if you are not fond of cooking, there are sushi restaurants on the corner and across the street). You can also bring beer if you like. Sorry for the short notice, but I just realized that it is getting close to June 28th, when I head off to Europe for 9 weeks and time is running out to post an event. Hope you can make it. Friends welcome.

BTW, if anyone wants to be an assistant organizer for the summer, let me know. I could post events, I just need someone to welcome people, etc.

I decided to have a Bring Your Own Sake event. I have a big (1.8) litre bottle of sake that I don't think I should try and finish myself, so I thought I would share it. It is quite unique. It was given to me as a gift by a restaurant owner from a small town between Nara and Osaka. He has it bottled just for his restaurant, so I don't think you will find it anywhere else. I am cross posting this with the Japanese Language Meetup. (The more the merrier)

Please bring some food and sake to share and a folding table, if you have any. If the numbers get too high I might ask people to bring folding chairs. If you don't like to cook there is a reasonably priced sushi place on the corner of my block (Broadway and Waterloo) and The Eatery is across the street.

Please take the bus (I am right on Broadway) or have a designated driver if you plan on drinking a bit.

One of the best of Japanese traditions is Hanami (cherry blossom viewing). In the spring every park in Japan is covered with blankets and crowded with people enjoying food, beverages (sake, beer, pop) and each other's company. Canada, however has archaic drinking laws which necessitate making the consumption of sake under the cherry trees a somewhat clandestine event. So in a blatant contravention of BC’s drinking laws, I am proposing an afternoon of sipping sake under the cherry blossoms. This means we will have to be somewhat creative. (bring your sake in a thermos, water bottle, etc. and drink it from a paper or Styrofoam cup) Please bring something to sit on, some snacks to share and some sake, of course. If the weather is nasty we will try again the following week and hopefully the blossoms will still be out. Please drink responsibly. (I think I am going to bring my bike) I will try and get there a bit early and stake out a spot. I will have a bright yellow golf umbrella with the Yellow Pages logo on it, so I should be easy to spot. Also, I am going to see if I can figure out some way of posting a link to a map of Queen E. Park. From 33rd and Cambie, just walk up the hill and look for me on the left. If the weather is questionable, or you can’t find us, call my cell at 604-802-9242.

Sorry for the short notice, but I am trying to have this before Masa, of Artisan Sake Makers on Granville Island heads off for a trip, so we will have his sake taking expertise at the event. Also, Sundays work well for me, as I am quite busy during the week these days. I am going to open this to both the Sake Meetup group and the Japanese Meetup group. (seems like a natural connection) Initially it will be 15 from each group, but I may change the mix, depending on the response each group. Please try to RSVP before Saturday evening so I can give the restaurant an accurate number for Sunday.

I have not been to this restaurant, but it was recommended, and does seem to have a good sake list.

For more info, visit their website: www.shuraku.net

Hope to see you there.

Happy New Year Sake Pals!
To start off what is to be a great year, I have arranged with my friend, Masa, from ArtisanSakemaker at Granville Island to have a tasting and tour at his brewery. There will be 6 different styles of sake to taste and there will be a litttle bit of food (small amount of cheese, charcuterie--please take note if you are vegetarian/vegan--this is all that will be served). You will also get a tour of Masa's brewing facility and find out how the stuff is made.

Masa will be conducting the tour, I will not be in town. Please keep your RSVP's current as last time, the tour was all booked and a few people didn't show up and we had a wait list of people that could not attend. Maximum for the tour/tasting will be 20 people and the price is a mere $15--special for our meetup group.
You can pay at the event and there will be sake available to purchase too!

Sake tasting of 6 delicious sakes--what a way to celebrate the new year!

Hope you can attend!

PLEASE NOTE--DATE CHANGE

Hello Sake Pals,
I am holding a quickie b.y.o.s. (bring yer own sake) at my pal's place in Gastown.
We'll have an area to ourselves and they serve food, so you can order something to munch on while we try the different sakes that everyone has contributed.

BYOS events are great in that it enables you to taste a wide range of sake, more so than any Japanese establishment in the city. I am always impressed by the varied selections we get, and rarely any doubles!
It would be great to see you out. This will probably be the last BYOS for a long while. Again, I'm looking for an Assistant Organizer. Contact me if ya wanna help out.

Here's the details:
Thursday, July 10, 2008, 7pm
Deighton's Well
131 Water Street (between Abbott and Cambie Streets)
Vancouver, BC

Waterfront Skytrain is a few blocks away.

Please RSVP asap, and if you need help with a sake or where to get a good bottle, feel free to drop me a line. Hope to see you soon!

Hey Sake Friends,
Hope you're trying to piece together a good summer!
What's with the weather here?

I am back briefly and would love to see you for a last minute June event at Octopus Garden.
This was the original place for last month's sake meetup, but they were suspiciously closed.
They are indeed open now, so let's give it a shot. Great inventive food and excellent sake selections abound!

Please RSVP asap and hope to see you at this month's event.
I am trying to arrange a BYOS before i depart again for July...will keep you posted.
Again, if anyone would like to help me out and offer to be assistant organizer of the Vancouver Sake Meetup Group, I would be indebted to anyone (a very good bottle sake??) who could step in and keep this group going while I am away on top secret sake situation.

Wishing you all well!

NEW update--Octopus Garden is not open!!! --I have been trying to call and am not sure what's going on there. I'm sorry to do this again, let's go to Seto Sushi in Richmond. Thursday May 29, 7pm.
Sorry again for the change and please update your RSVP if need be.
Thanks.

Hey Sake Friends!
Here's a quick invite to meet me for a sake sampler at Octopus Garden, which has an excellent selection of fine sake and top quality eats. We've been before and had excellent service along with a great trio sake sampler.

I am also looking for an assistant organizer for the group, as I will be leaving town for a period of time.
It's sake-related and I can't give away much at this point, but I'll have lots of stories to tell when i return.
So if you are keen and interested in helping organize the sake group, please contact me asap! I would really like to see it continue on and flourish during my time away!

Hope to see you at May's event. Please remember to RSVP!
Thanks and best wishes to all of you.

So the Hanami Sake day is just not going to happen for us in rainy unpredictable April!
Officially cancelled for Sunday, we are going to try again Monday, April 28th at 7pm.
This event will be inside at my friend's motorcycle store. It's airy and shiny inside. Lots of neat things to look at and enjoy a little sake and snacks.

So bring yourself, a sake and a little nibble and let's do this thing indoors where we know it won't rain out on us!

Here's the location again:
Forza Crono
116 West 2nd Avenue
Vancouver, BC
(between manitoba and columbia streets)
